T.48 Endochondral ossification.

End of femur of developing bone (See previous slide T47). This shows the growth plate in a long bone and extends from the hyaline cartlilage (stained blue) to the formation of the bone (right). Observe the following zones:

  • Zone 1. Normal resting cartilage

  • Zone 2. Columns of cartilage cells - due to division

  • Zone 3. Hypertrophy of cartilage cells.

  • Zone 4. Death of cartilage cells - leaving organic matrix as scaffold.

  • Zone 5. Deposition of new bone by osteoblasts on the intercellular matrix 'bridges'.
